BANGLADESH

The beginning of the monsoon rain in Cox’s Bazar begins to impact on the refugee sites even as mitigation measures are ongoing. An early monsoon storm on 12 May, affected more than 1,500 households, due to heavy winds and landslides. The storm damaged 700 shelters and displaced 120 people. Humanitarian partners continue to work to mitigate the risk from the monsoons and to date over 16,000 people have been relocated within the camps. Additional land, allocated by the Government of Bangladesh in March, is being prepared for yet more relocations of people at risk of landslide or flood.
Shelter upgrades also continue in the camps and settlements, with 141,000 households (78%) supported to date, to strengthen their existing shelters— although even with improvements, shelters will not withstand cyclones or other major weather events.

AFGHANISTAN

Three earthquakes with a magnitude ranging from 4.8 and 6.2 on the Richter scale were felt in Afghanistan, two on 9 May and one the following day. Around 500 houses have been damaged or destroyed, the majority of them in Badakhshan Province.

Conflict has displaced nearly 10,000 people in the past week in Badakhshan, Baghlan, Kunar and Hilmand provinces, according to initial reports.

The number of people forced by drought to migrate within the country has reached more than 20,000 with the majority of them arriving in Hirat Province from Badghis and Ghor provinces. Humanitarian partners and authorities are providing emergency assistance.

MYANMAR

More than 8,000 people have been newly displaced in Kachin and Shan states since early April. This includes over 7,400 people in Kachin who have been displaced as a result of fighting between the Myanmar Military and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA). Displaced people are sheltering in local churches, existing camps, or with host families across eight townships in Kachin State where they have received initial assistance. However, more support is needed for shelter, food, health, education, water and sanitation services.

In northern Shan, over 600 people have been displaced in Namtu Township as a result of fighting between the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and the Restoration Council of Shan State/Shan State Army (RCSS/SSA). On 12 May, armed clashes between the TNLA and a militia group allied to the Myanmar Military in Muse Town in northern Shan State left 19 people dead – including 14 civilians – and 27 injured, according to government sources.
